The BBC iPlayer icon has disappeared. What can I do?
Sony have posted an updated post on their Playstation 3 technical support website that provides a solution to this problem.
How do I install the new version of BBC iPlayer on my Playstation 3?
Just turn your Playstation 3 on and ensure you are signed into the PSN (Playstation Network). When you select BBC iPlayer you will be prompted to download the new version. It can take several minutes to acquire the data as this happens in the background, however the quickest way is to leave the cursor on "what's new" part of the XMB (XrossMediaBar) for about 1 min as this forces the system to refresh the latest metadata.
We recommend that your Playstation 3 has the latest firmware installed.
How do I exit BBC iPlayer?
To exit BBC iPlayer hold down the PS Button on your controller for approximately 3 seconds.
Does my personalisation list on my computer transfer across to the Playstation 3 version?
BBC ID is not yet available for BBC iPlayer for TV so your personalisation choices are device specific.
Transport controls. How do fast forward or rewind content?
One tap of the "right" or "left" direction buttons on your controller followed by a pause skips 1 min forward or back (what you might call a little nudge); whereas repeatedly hitting it skips 10%.
HD or SD? - How do I change settings so that either HD or SD is my default version of a programme?
You can set up High Definition or Standard Definition as the default playback version (when available) in the settings menu of BBC iPlayer.
I'm experiencing buffering issues while watching in HD. What can I do?
You'll have to manually select SD which will allow the programme to continue from the same point using less bandwidth.
What bandwidth is required for HD playback?
HD programmes are streamed at 2800 kb/s. Please check with your ISP if you are experiencing buffering issues and you think you have a fast enough connection.
Why are some programmes not available to watch in High Definition?
A programme needs to have been broadcast either on the BBC HD or BBC One HD channel to be available in HD on BBC iPlayer. Sometimes a programme isn't available in HD due to rights restrictions. Also, if a programme was broadcasted live, it may take longer for a HD definition version to be made available due to additional processing required. In these instances please try again later.
Do I need to connect my Playstation 3 to my TV via an HDMI connection to view HD programmes?
Yes. You can only view HD connect when your Playstation 3 is connected to your TV with an HDMI cable. HD content on BBC iPlayer is not viewable via the component outputs of your Playstation 3.
Where is the volume control on PlayStation 3 BBC iPlayer?
The on-screen audio volume control has been removed on this latest version of BBC iPlayer. To alter the audio level you will need to change the volume on your television.
Why has BBC iPlayer (and other video-on-demand services) disappeared from my PlayStation 3 XMB?
This is due to a Sony system software update. Sony have responded to comments on their blog related to this update on how to resolve the issue:

To resolve this issue you will need to clear the cache in your browser.
MediaSourceError message on PlayStation 3
If you are experiencing problems with our recent update to the PlayStation 3 version of BBC iPlayer, you can uninstall the BBC iPlayer app, restart the PS3 and reinstall.
1.) Delete the application (Select BBC iPlayer, press Triangle and choose delete)
2.) Restart PS3
3.) Browse to ‘My TV Channels' and select ‘BBC iPlayer'
I'm having difficulty accessing BBC iPlayer on my Sony PlayStation 3. What can I do?
If you are experiencing difficulty accessing the BBC iPlayer after the PS3 3.70 software update and cannot see the TV/Video Services option in the XMB, please try the following:
- Register with the PlayStation Network
- Sign into the PlayStation Store
- Download a TV/Video Service (see http://bit.ly/ntImO6 for examples)
- Exit PlayStation Store
- TV/Video Services should now be displayed
- Under TV/Video Services, Select 'My Channels'
- BBC iPlayer is listed under this category
It may prompt you download BBC iPlayer after which the BBC iPlayer icon will display in the TV/Video Services list.
We have found that restarting the PS3 a number of times may be required.
